Spanish banking group Unicaja has entered into a strategic agreement with US fintech giant Fiserv to “develop advanced solutions in payments and e-commerce”.Unicaja enters payments partnership with FiservThe partnership, which the bank says “in response to growing market demand in Spain from merchants of all sizes”, aims to develop new tools that “enhance the omnichannel processing of all payment methods”.These are to include point-of-sale (POS) systems, e-commerce solutions and multi-currency sales.Commenting on what is described as Fiserv’s “first such opportunity in Spain”, Katia Karpova, the fintech’s EVP and head of EMEA, believes the collaboration with Unicaja can shape the “local merchant acquiring market, while creating long-term value for Unicaja’s commercial banking relationships”.Unicaja operates a nationwide network of approximately 1,000 branches, nearly 2,500 ATMs, and employs 8,000 staff.The banking group provides its over four million customer base with a range of financial products, including savings accounts, loans, Mastercard-powered debit and credit cards, insurance, pensions and mortgage plans.The new partnership comes just weeks after Fiserv entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Payfare, a Canada-based earned wage access enterprise for $147 million, in an endeavour to expand its payment options for gig economy workers.
