It’s a tragic reality that the global climate crisis is not a sudden or unexpected phenomenon. Scientists have been predicting its effects for decades, and many of the major polluters responsible for it were well aware of the consequences of their actions.
A new report from the nonprofit Energy and Policy Institute, titled “Duke Energy Knew,” sheds light on this disturbing truth. It reveals that as early as the 1970s, the utilities that make up Duke Energy Corporation were aware of the link between burning fossil fuels and climate change. And even more concerning, the report shows that by the 1990s, Duke utilities were actively promoting disinformation campaigns to deny the science of climate change and oppose regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.
While Duke Energy cannot change the past, it has the power to take action now to address its past mistakes. The report serves as a wake-up call for Duke and other polluters to take responsibility for their actions and work towards a more sustainable future.
As we continue to face the devastating effects of climate change, it’s crucial for companies like Duke Energy to take a proactive approach in reducing their carbon footprint and investing in renewable energy sources. The consequences of inaction are too great to ignore.
