First innovation challenge for the GreenTech Hub will focus on energy storageGreenTech Hub builds State’s capability and capacity in greenThe GreenTech Hub, a cutting-edge facility operated by Curtin University and funded by the Cook Government and Chevron-operated Gorgon Project, is leading the way in developing innovative energy storage solutions. As part of the State’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions, the hub’s first innovation challenge will focus on exploring advanced energy storage systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
The GreenTech Hub, which is part of the $40 million Lower Carbon Grants Program (LCG) – Gorgon Fund, aims to build the State’s capability and capacity in green technologies and services. With a joint funding agreement between the Cook Government and Chevron-operated Gorgon Joint Venture, the hub has a budget of $4 million over four years.
Earlier this year, Curtin University was announced as the operator of the GreenTech Hub, responsible for connecting and collaborating with industry and academic experts through hosting innovation challenges and accelerator programs. Each challenge will be supported by a consortium of industry partners, working together to identify and deploy new technologies to address the identified problem or challenge.
The first challenge will focus on exploring energy storage technologies that will provide clean and stable solutions for communities in the future. This includes investigating long-duration and scalable technologies to enhance reliability and efficiency for both urban and remote applications.
The GreenTech Hub joins the existing State-funded innovation hubs, which focus on data science, cybersecurity, creative technologies, and life sciences. This new hub will be a catalyst for inspiring, mobilizing, and connecting green entrepreneurship and commercialization across Western Australia.
Innovation and the Digital Economy Minister Stephen Dawson stated, “The Cook Government is committed to achieving our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and the GreenTech Hub is a fantastic way to foster collaboration in the State. This hub will be a catalyst for inspiring, mobilizing, and connecting green entrepreneurship and commercialization across Western Australia. The first challenge, focusing on energy storage, will bring together industry, government, academics, and others to lead the charge into the future.”
