The USDA’s Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) has reached a major milestone, surpassing $1 billion in investments towards clean energy projects. This was announced by the agency’s Under Secretary for Rural Development, Dr. Basil Gooden, at the 2024 NAFB Convention in Kansas City.

REAP, which supports clean energy projects in 40 states, has been instrumental in helping farmers address climate change while also reducing energy costs. According to Dr. Gooden, the program has been oversubscribed due to its ability to show rural communities how to save money in their operations.

In an interview with Brownfield, Dr. Gooden highlighted the success of REAP in improving energy efficiency and promoting the installation of renewable energy systems on farms and businesses. He also mentioned that the program has been the largest-ever investment in combating the climate crisis.

The Inflation Reduction Act has been a major contributor to REAP’s success, providing funding for over a thousand clean energy projects. Dr. Gooden emphasized the importance of these investments in helping rural communities become more sustainable and resilient.

In conclusion, REAP’s achievement of surpassing $1 billion in clean energy investments is a testament to the program’s effectiveness in promoting renewable energy and addressing climate change. With its continued support, rural communities can look forward to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
