India’s double taxation treaty with Switzerland may need to be renegotiated due to the trade pact with EFTA member states. The Swiss government has suspended the most favoured nation status clause in the India-Switzerland Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). The MEA spokesperson stated that the DTAA will be renegotiated due to the EFTA trade pact. The trade deal between India and the EFTA member states of Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein is yet to come into force. The Swiss Finance Department has announced the suspension of the MFN clause due to a 2023 ruling by the Indian Supreme Court in a case involving Nestle. This decision could have a significant impact on trade and investment between the two countries.
