The World Bank Group has approved a loan of €31.0 million to support Montenegro in its efforts to decarbonize its energy sector and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. The Montenegro Energy Sector Decarbonization Project aims to improve energy efficiency in public buildings, with a particular focus on the Montenegro National University and various administrative buildings. Additionally, the project aims to facilitate the integration of more renewable energy capacity into the power distribution grid in Montenegro, while also enhancing the grid’s reliability and resilience to climate change.

According to Christopher Sheldon, the World Bank Country Manager for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, this project plays a crucial role in supporting Montenegro’s energy transition agenda and its pursuit of a modern and sustainable energy sector. He also noted that the project will create better and more comfortable conditions for university students and academic staff.

The project is expected to result in significant energy savings, a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, and the development of more resilient energy infrastructure. It aligns with Montenegro’s commitment to decarbonize its energy sector and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with the European Union’s objectives.

The approval of the Energy Sector Decarbonization Project coincides with the release of the World Bank Group’s Country Climate and Development Report for Montenegro. This report provides a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable development and climate resilience, emphasizing the importance of expanding renewable energy sources like wind and solar, in addition to Montenegro’s existing hydroelectric capacity. It also highlights the critical need to invest in energy efficiency and other key measures as part of the broader decarbonization strategy.

In conclusion, the World Bank Group’s loan and the Country Climate and Development Report for Montenegro demonstrate the organization’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts towards a greener and more sustainable future. By investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, Montenegro is taking significant steps towards achieving its decarbonization goals and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
