Launch of the UN World Economic Situation and Prospects 2025Press briefing live on UN WebTVThe report is under embargo until 9 January 2025, 12:30 pm ESTDespite falling inflation, improving labour market conditions, and stabilizing GDP growth worldwide, global growth is still below the pace seen before the pandemic and the world economy continues to face significant uncertainties. This continues to gravely impact progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially for many developing countries that are still suffering from the accumulated impacts of successive crises. The UN World Economic Situation and Prospects 2025 will present the global and regional economic outlooks for the coming year, underscoring the importance of global cooperation and prudent policies to lift growth and place it on a stable and equitable pathway that can accelerate progress towards the SDGs. This year’s thematic chapter takes a deep dive into the subject of critical minerals for the energy transition that can ramp up climate action while presenting opportunities for many developing countries to create jobs, generate public revenues and reduce poverty and inequality. Such favourable outcomes are not inevitable, however, and need coherent national policies as well as international support to become possible.
