Standard Chartered has named Maria Ramos as its new group chair, with current chair José Viñals concluding his nine-year term this year.Maria Ramos will assume her new role on 8 May (Image: Standard Chartered)Ramos, who has been the bank’s senior independent director since September 2022, will start her new role following Viñals’ retirement from the board on 8 May 2025 after the company’s AGM.“Maria’s appointment concludes a rigorous and wide-ranging search process for José’s successor, in which the board considered a diverse range of experienced and highly qualified candidates from across the globe,” explains Phil Rivett, chair of the selection panel. “Her knowledge of the banking sector, as well as a deep understanding of the group’s unique footprint stood out.”In her new role, Ramos says she will be “working closely with the board, Bill [Winters, Standard Chartered’s CEO], the management team and our global colleagues to deliver the next phase of the group’s strategy”.This includes the bank’s global digital asset strategy, which saw the recent launch of a Luxembourg-based entity to provide digital asset custody services across the EU.Prior to joining Standard Chartered in 2021, Ramos’ career included acting as CEO of South African financial services group ABSA Group from 2009 to 2019, as well as serving as South Africa’s National Treasury director-general for seven years.
