Phil Coupe, co-founder of ReVision Energy, argues that recent concerns about rising utility bills in Maine overlook and misconstrue the proven benefits of solar policies. He points to multiple independent studies that have found the benefits of solar to ratepayers significantly outweigh the costs, while also increasing the state’s energy independence and resilience.

Coupe highlights the significant contribution of Maine’s renewable energy industry to the state’s economy, with over $2.3 billion and 15,000 jobs created in 2022. He also notes that investing in locally built renewable energy projects keeps energy dollars in the Maine economy, creating long-term energy independence and resilience to the negative impacts of climate change.

As a Maine-based company, ReVision Energy has firsthand experience with the positive impact of solar energy on the economy and local communities. The company, which started in Liberty in 2003, has grown into a 100 percent employee-owned solar company with nearly 300 Maine co-owners. These jobs not only include installers, but also engineers, project developers, and roles in service, IT, finance, marketing, and sales.

Coupe addresses the misconception that the solar industry is entirely out of state, noting that many solar companies in Maine are locally owned and operated. He also emphasizes the immediate and long-term cost savings for homeowners and businesses who invest in solar energy.

While some Maine businesses may be facing rising energy bills, Coupe argues that the responsible approach is to seek collaborative solutions rather than pointing fingers at solar energy. He urges for a more collaborative approach and highlights the Maine Renewable Energy Association as an example of this.

In conclusion, Coupe stresses the importance of investing in solar energy for the benefit of future generations and the economy, while also addressing the immediate concerns of rising energy costs.
