Maine has joined the growing list of states taking legal action against oil and gas companies for their role in contributing to climate change. In a new lawsuit filed by the state’s attorney general, it is alleged that Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, and other major players in the industry have been deceiving the public for decades about the harmful effects of fossil fuels on the environment.

The complaint, filed in a Maine state court on Tuesday, accuses the companies of withholding crucial information about the consequences of fossil fuel use since the 1960s. This, in turn, has led to a financial burden on the state as it grapples with the impacts of climate change, such as sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and rising temperatures.

The lawsuit includes seven alleged violations, including failure to warn, negligence, nuisance, trespass, and unfair trade practices. It also names the American Petroleum Institute, an industry group, for allegedly aiding and abetting the deceptive conduct of the fossil fuel companies.

Maine’s attorney general, Aaron M. Frey, a Democrat, stated that these companies have prioritized profits over the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants for over half a century. He added that their actions have resulted in irreversible and catastrophic climate effects, burdening the state and its citizens.

The state is seeking a jury trial and funding for past damages, as well as measures to adapt, mitigate, and build resilience against the impacts of climate change in Maine.

Governor Janet Mills, also a Democrat, emphasized the urgency of holding the fossil fuel industry accountable, especially in light of the recent severe storms that have hit the state. She stated that these events are further proof that climate change is harming lives, health, and the economy, and it is time for the industry to take responsibility.

In response to the lawsuit, Exxon Mobil has denied the allegations and stated that it has invested over $20 billion in lower-emission initiatives. However, the state of Maine is determined to hold these companies accountable for their actions and seek justice for the harm caused by their deceptive practices.

As the effects of climate change continue to worsen, it is crucial for all industries to take responsibility for their contributions and work towards sustainable solutions. The state of Maine’s lawsuit is a significant step towards holding the fossil fuel industry accountable and promoting a more sustainable future for all.
