At 4:30 today, we will hear from family members of the victim who spoke in court this morning. Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey has taken legal action against a handful of major oil companies for deceiving Maine residents about the role their fossil fuel products played in causing climate change. The lawsuit, filed in state court, alleges that the defendants violated Maine law seven times and seeks to hold them accountable for their actions. The state is asking the court to require the companies to pay for past and future climate harms and to stop their ongoing deception in Maine. This lawsuit comes after decades of the companies’ strategic public relations campaigns to discredit the scientific consensus on climate change and delay the transition to a lower-carbon future. As a result, Maine has faced significant financial burdens, public health impacts, and property damage from extreme weather, rising sea levels, and warmer temperatures. It is time for these companies to take responsibility for their actions and for the state of Maine to seek justice for its citizens.
