Tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have announced plans to expand into Indiana, signaling potential economic growth for the state. However, it’s important to recognize that our economic success should not rely solely on fossil fuels. Instead, we should prioritize the development of renewable energy sources.
The Nature Conservancy is a strong advocate for policies that promote renewable energy and protect our climate. And we’re not alone in this mission. A recent poll showed that two-thirds of Hoosiers (61%) support a requirement for the state to obtain 50% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050. This aligns with the ambitious goals set by many corporations, including Salesforce, Cummins, Eli Lilly and Co., OneAmerica Financial, and Roche, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to green energy.
In fact, new regulations in the European Union will soon require these companies to report emissions for operations both inside and outside of European countries. This means that sourcing green energy, especially from local suppliers, will become a top priority for these businesses. As a result, the demand for renewable energy will continue to grow.
Fortunately, Indiana has ample opportunities for renewable energy development. With vast areas of land suitable for solar and wind power, including over 150,000 acres of unused former mining sites and 155,000 acres of brownfields near existing infrastructure, we have the potential to significantly increase our renewable energy capacity. Additionally, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has received $385 million in federal grants to reclaim abandoned mine lands, providing a prime opportunity for renewable energy development.
In conclusion, it’s clear that renewable energy is not only beneficial for our environment but also for our economy. As more businesses prioritize sustainability and green energy, it’s crucial that Indiana takes steps to develop and utilize our renewable energy resources. By doing so, we can attract more businesses, protect our climate, and benefit our communities. Let’s work together to make Indiana a leader in renewable energy.
