The Malaysian government is urging stakeholders, particularly housing developers, to embrace alternative energy sources like solar power and prioritize biodiversity, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who also serves as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, emphasized the importance of increasing the use of renewable energy, as its adoption remains low despite efforts in recent years.

According to the National Energy Transition Roadmap, only four percent of energy in Malaysia comes from renewable sources like hydro and bioenergy, falling significantly short of the 23 percent target set for 2050. Speaking at the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (Rehda) 2024 dinner, Fadillah urged developers to enhance sustainability efforts by implementing practices such as Industrial Building Systems (IBS) and using sustainable building materials.

To support these initiatives, the government will continue to provide measures like the Clean Energy Metering Scheme, which has been extended until June 30, 2025, and an e-rebate of RM70 million to encourage the purchase of energy-efficient equipment. Fadillah also addressed the issue of abandoned housing projects, stressing the need to protect buyers’ rights.

While Rehda members may not be involved in sick or abandoned projects, Fadillah hopes that the association, as the primary voice for housing developers, can collaborate to resolve these issues and safeguard buyers’ welfare. According to a report from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, as of October 31, 2024, there were 707 private housing projects categorized as sick, abandoned, or delayed, affecting 129,007 housing units purchased by 73,857 individuals.

In conclusion, the Malaysian government is committed to promoting the use of renewable energy and sustainable practices in the housing industry. By working together with stakeholders, we can achieve our goal of a more environmentally friendly and responsible housing sector. Let us continue to prioritize the well-being of our citizens and the preservation of our planet.
