Donald Trump secured a second term as president thanks to the support of 80% of white evangelical Christian voters, who view the Florida businessman as a fulfillment of a divine mandate. However, there are millions of people of faith in the country who are now concerned about the direction Trump will take the United States, particularly in regards to his “drill, baby drill” agenda and its potential impact on global efforts to combat climate change.

During his first four years in office, Trump rolled back approximately 200 environmental regulations, including withdrawing the United States from the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. President Joe Biden has since reversed most of these actions and successfully pushed for the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest single investment in reducing climate-warming pollution in the nation’s history.

With Trump set to return to office on January 20th, he has promised to further advance his pro-fossil fuel agenda by increasing U.S. oil production and gas exports, while also cutting regulations that protect air and water quality. He has also stated his intention to reduce federal support for the clean energy transition, which has been bolstered by billions of dollars in investments in electric vehicle capacity and renewable energy. Additionally, Trump has vowed to once again withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, which he has deemed a disadvantageous deal for the country.
