CSTFor those eligible under the Chapter 35 Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program, clarity on payment schedules is essential-especially as we head into January 2025. This program offers crucial financial support to spouses and children of veterans who are deceased or permanently disabled due to service-connected injuries.January 2025 payments are expected to follow the standard VA timeline, with funds typically disbursed around the first of the month following the start of classes. As such, if your school’s term begins in January, you can anticipate payment for that month to be processed shortly thereafter. Keep in mind, though, that the VA prorates payments for partial months. For instance, if your term starts mid-month, your January payment will reflect only the days of enrollment in that month.Your monthly payment depends on various factors, including the type of education or training and your enrollment status. Full-time students, for example, can receive $1,536 per month, while three-quarter-time students are eligible for $1,214. Part-time students and those in on-the-job training or apprenticeships will see reduced rates based on their schedule. If your program involves less than half-time enrollment, the VA covers tuition and fees up to specific limits, with payments issued as lump sums at the start of each term.If you’re new to the DEA program, ensure all your paperwork is in order. Applications should be submitted through the VA’s online platform (VONAPP), and once approved, provide your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) to your school’s Military Certifying Official. They will handle the certification of your enrollment to the VA, which can take 4-6 weeks to process.Verify your enrollment is certified with the VA.Double-check your school’s start dates for January, as payment depends on the specific number of days you’re enrolled. If your term begins in mid-January, expect a prorated payment for that month.Remember, while processing times can vary, your payment should arrive in a timely manner. If delays occur, contact the VA or your school’s certifying official for assistance.
