CSTCHAMPVA is a benefits program that focuses on VA health care. Generally, those who can take advantage of these benefits are the children and dependents of veterans, as well as widows who suffer from a service-connected disability. Note that this is not a medical insurance program, but rather a medical expense reimbursement program. In a sense, beneficiaries pay for health care services and then seek reimbursement from the VA. It is important to keep all receipts and bills because you never know when they may be requested. The reality is that the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) can be a great support for your veteran family, it can be full of tedious processes, but it is a matter of patience. When you enroll in CHAMPVA, you get help with the cost of certain medical services and supplies. If you have other health insurance in addition to CHAMPVA, you may not be responsible for any additional costs. This program covers a wide range of medical treatments and products. Some of the services included are:Care related to family planning and pregnancy carePalliative care for those facing serious illnessHospitalization (if you need to be admitted)Psychological therapy and supportOutpatient consultations and procedures (such as physicals)Skilled nursing care (provided by professionals trained to help with medication administration, wound care and other medical care)Ambulance transportationPrescribed medical equipment to help you with daily activitiesOrgan transplant surgeryPrescription drugsTypically, the program covers certain medical services and products at a value very similar to what Medicare or TRICARE is, which is known as a fair and authorized amount. Here’s how the cost of medical care is shared:At the beginning of each year, you must meet a $50 deductible, or $100 if it’s for the whole family. You must pay this amount before we begin to cover some of the cost of services, such as urgent prescriptions through OptumRx or outpatient visits. There is no deductible for hospital stays. In addition, you are responsible for paying 25% of the cost of each service or product we cover, based on the approved amount. If you have other insurance coverage, you may not be responsible for this portion. The maximum amount you will pay per year is $3,000 per person on the plan. Once you reach this limit, we will pay 100% of the cost of covered services. We also invite you to always keep an eye out for any news, because now with the change with Donald Trump in the presidency, changes can come with an almost immediate effect that no one can predict.
