Consumers Energy is expanding its battery electric energy storage capacity by 100 megawatts, bringing the total to 400 megawatts. The company has announced plans to purchase electricity from a new facility being built by Voyager Energy Storage in Saline Township, located in Washtenaw County. According to Sri Maddipati, Consumers’ vice president of electric supply, this move will help maximize the use of available electricity resources.
Maddipati explains that storing energy in batteries allows for more efficient use of electricity generated from sources like solar and wind. By storing excess energy during the day and using it during peak demand times, such as when people are at home or during hot weather, the company can better meet the needs of its customers. The 400 megawatts of battery storage will be able to provide about 5% of peak electricity demand.
The battery facilities will recharge when there is excess solar or wind power being generated, further increasing the efficiency of the system. The new facility is expected to cost Consumers Energy approximately $400 million and is set to go online in 2027. However, Maddipati assures customers that they will see cost reductions by then as well.
