Why We Chose It

Assurity has a lot to offer. Of the ROP providers Investopedia analyzed, Assurity offers the best living benefits package, with two accelerated benefit riders included at no extra cost. Living benefits allow you to access your policy’s death benefit if you get a serious illness. Assurity’s pricing is also good and you can get a large policy, all through an online application.

Pros & Cons

Pros
Three living benefit riders available, one at no extra cost
Relatively low premiums
Large coverage limit
Online quote available
Instant decision available for some policies

Cons
Mediocre complaint record
Less impressive financial strength than competitors

Overview

Assurity provides the most complete package for ROP life insurance. Assurity’s ROP term premiums were the second-lowest we saw, only slightly higher than AAA’s. Policies can be as small as $25,000 or as big as $10 million, ranking only below State Farm for maximum limits. And we like that you can apply online. You can even get an instant decision on no-medical-exam policies up to $1 million for applicants aged 18-50 or $500,000 for those 51-65 years old.

Assurity’s ROP life insurance includes several extra perks while you’re alive on top of the death benefit. It offers terminal, chronic, and critical illness riders, which means you can access your death benefit to pay for your care if you get a serious illness. The terminal and chronic illness riders are included at no additional cost. In addition, you can convert the policy to a permanent policy without taking another health exam.

Assurity just meets our inclusion threshold of having an A- financial strength rating from the credit rating agency AM Best. That’s still great and indicates the company has an excellent chance of paying its obligations years down the road, but it’s not as good as many competitors we considered.

Assurity’s customer complaint record is fair. State regulators received slightly fewer complaints about Assurity than expected for a company of Assurity’s size. That’s not bad, but it’s also not great compared to many stand-out customer pleasers Investopedia reviewed.

Assurity is a certified B corporation, indicating the company meets high standards of accountability and transparency, and is committed to social equity and the environment. The company has been based in Lincoln, Nebraska since it was founded in 1890.
