Why We Chose It

Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU) is our top-ranked credit union, thanks to its wide variety of useful account types and low fees. It also earned an excellent rating in Investopedia’s combined customer satisfaction score, which aggregates data from a variety of customer reviews.

DCU offers a free checking account that actually earns interest, although the rate is relatively low and it only applies to the first $1,000 on deposit. But it’s better than nothing, which is what you typically get with free checking. It’s similar with savings accounts, where DCU offers a great rate with its Primary Savings Account, but only for the first $1,000.

Still, DCU has other savings accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs) that don’t have those limits but do offer above-average rates, although they may not be quite as high as the best available high-yield savings accounts and high-yield CDs.

Despite its name, DCU maintains a number of brick-and-mortar branches, but only in Massachusetts.
